Hey,
Here are 5 things I thought were worth sharing this week:
I’ve been making collages again (see above). There’s something about getting messy with glue and tape and magazines that makes me happy. I put on some music, usually solfeggio frequencies, and lose myself in the mayhem that ensues. No matter what, something usually appears. Margaret Miller wrote a great little piece on the purpose of making collages.
I thought The Ezra Klein Show podcast episode with Rick Rubin was fascinating. I could have listened to them talk all day. Rick Rubin sounds like the kind of guy you want as a friend. Always discovering cool, new things and a constant source of inspiration. He’s so gentle and calm too.
I watched Tetris, the movie, recently. I was pleasantly surprised as to how good it was, and had no idea before watching it of the history of the game. It’s a fascinating, political thriller - and while I was sure it was a Hollywood version of the truth - when I did some research afterwards, it turns out that much of it was real. There’s a great article about it.
I just finished reading Ariel Levy’s The Rules Do Not Apply. A fantastic book, very well written. It’s a brutally honest and vulnerable account of some of the most tragic moments of her life. Famous for her ‘bulldoze through fear’ approach to life, it’s both enlightening and horrifying at the same time. Levy talks about the process of writing the book in this brilliant interview with Longreads.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Tears For Fears recently. They had a new album out last year, The Tipping Point, their first in 18 years and a lot of water has gone under the bridge in that time - most notably Roland Orzabal losing his wife - which is obviously an important theme that runs through the album. Their albums, The Hurting, and Songs From The Big Chair, surely must go down as two of the great albums of the 80s, if not of all time.
Thanks for reading!
My new book, B7965 - A boy called Szmulek: A man named Sam, will be out on June 1st. It’s a powerful memoir of my unexpected year-long journey with a Holocaust survivor. I’m super proud of it and very passionate about sharing Sam’s incredible story and getting it out into the world.
